Die Skala stellt ein quantitatives Maß für die subjektive Stärke des Entzugssyndroms nach multiplem Substanzgebrauch mit 35 Items dar. Ausgangspunkt ist der von der WHO 1964 geprägte Begriff der Drogenabhängigkeit (drug dependence) als ein Zustand psychischer oder psychischer und physischer Abhängigkeit von einer Substanz mit zentralnervöser Wirkung, die zeitweise oder fortgesetzt eingenommen wird. Reliabilität: Cronbachs Alpha betrug Alpha = .95. Validität: Untersucht wurden der Zusammenhang zwischen dem Skalenwert für die subjektive Entzugsstärke und dem objektiven Wert für die Abnahme der Drogenmenge im Urin (r = .21-.27). Eine schriftliche Befragung des Pflegepersonals als Experten erbrachte signifikante Zusammenhänge zwischen Skalenwerten einerseits und Gesamtwert der Expertenbefragung und einzelnen Symptomeinschätzungen andererseits (rmax = .47). Festgestellt wurde außerdem ein signifikanter Zusammenhang zwischen der anfänglichen Substitutionsmenge als Maß für die vor dem Entzug konsumierte Drogenmenge und der der Entzugsskala (r = .20-.30).
