Site Data of an Archaeological Evaluation at Pelham Spring Solar Farm, Maggotts End, Berden, Essex, August 2023

This collection comprises images and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation on land at Pelham Spring Solar Farm, Maggotts End, Berden, Essex. This was carried out in August 2023 by Cotswold Archaeology. Finds include pottery assemblages where the majority of the pottery recovered from the moat and internal features was dated to the mid-12th to mid-14th century. Based on the pottery dates, it appears that activity within the moated site ceased during the 14th century, most likely as part of the retreat from and abandonment of less suitable agricultural land following the population collapse of the mid-14th century, in line with the wider regional trend.
