Musty odor in Lakes produced by cyanobacteria has been a worldwide problem. High-throughput determination of whole 2-MIB producing cyanobacteria in a Lake is useful to predict and control musty odor event. We conducted amplicon sequencing of MIB cyclase gene (mic) of cyanobacteria to determine 2-MIB producing cyanobacteria in Lake Ogawara of Japan. Amplicon sequencing of MIB cyclase gene estimated that the 2-MIB producing cyanobacteria in Lake Ogawara is Pseudanabaena. Two OTUs of Pseudanabanea were detected. The difference in spatial occurrence of the two OTUs in Lake Ogawara indicates a difference of their growth characteristics. This result suggests the importance of strain level tracing of 2-MIB producing cyanobacteria.
