Ottoman Nufus Defters for Kremena-i-zir/Dolna Kremena, 1831-1839. Transcriptions, Bulgarian translation, Comparison

This dataset contains full transcriptions and Bulgarian translations of three Ottoman registers (defters) relating to the village of Kremena-i-zir (Bulgarian:Долна Кремена, Mezdra municipality, northwestern Bulgaria). The registers span 1831–1839 and comprise three nüfus (population) defters from the Ottoman State Archives (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi, Istanbul). The nüfus defters record all male inhabitants by household, with physical descriptions and approximate ages. The transcription and translation were commissioned by Boris Stefanov and carried out by Dr. Alcan Cafer Mustafa (Director, Regional Historical Museum, Targovishte, Bulgaria), specialist in Ottoman Turkish paleography. The dataset also includes a comparative table, tracing the individuals through the three consecutive documents. The table illustrates the dramatic change in the population from 1831 to 1836, coinciding with a known plague epidemic in the region.
