The primary objectives of the GRADFLEX investigation can be summarized as follows: To investigate non-equilibrium fluctuations in microgravity by studying the behavior of gradient-driven fluctuations in a microgravity environment, where the stabilizing influence of gravity is significantly reduced. To measure the divergence of large-size fluctuations by observing and quantifying this divergence up to the limits imposed by the sample size. To quantify the amplitude and spatial extent of fluctuations by precisely measuring the mean-squared amplitude of the fluctuations as a function of both wave vector (spatial extent) and frequency (temporal dynamics). The investigation aims to rigorously test existing theoretical models of non-equilibrium fluctuations including comparing the measured amplitude and q-dependence of S(q) with predictions, both on Earth and in microgravity. Beyond the static properties (amplitude and spatial extent), the investigation also seeks to characterize the temporal dynamics of the fluctuations.
