COMPARATIVE BIOCHEMISTRY OF THE ANTARCTIC FUR SEAL: SERUM VALUES OF TOTAL PROTEINS, ALBUMIN, APOLIPOPROTEIN-B AND IMMUNOGLOBULIN M-PICTO 11559

The objective of our work was to determine basal biochemical blood parameters in the antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella), which will serve as reference in further studies of pinniped metabolism.

The study was carried out at 25 de Mayo Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, during the 1998 field season. Blood samples from 17 specimens of juvenile and sub-adult non-breeding males were collected and the following determinations were carried out: Total Pro-teins (TP), Albumin (Alb), Aplolipoprotein-B (Apo-B) and Immunoglobulin M (IgM).

Due to the lack of data on this subject, this study provides useful biochemical information for biological and veterinary studies on marine mammals, and for the conservation of the species in zoos and aquaria.

BIOQUIMICA COMPARADA DEL LOBO FINO ANTARTICO: VALORES SERICOS DE PROTEINAS TOTALES, ALBUMINA, APOLIPOPROTEINA-B E INMUNOGLOBULINA M

El objetivo de nuestro trabajo fue determinar par�metros sangu�neos basales en el lo-bo fino ant�rtico (Arctocephalus gazella), los cuales servir�n de referencia en futuros estu-dios sobre el metabolismo de pinn�pedos.

El estudio se realiz� en la isla 25 de Mayo, islas Shetland del Sur, Ant�rtida, durante la campa�a de 1998. Se extrajeron muestras de sangre de 17 espec�menes de machos juveni-les y sub-adultos no reproductores, y se realizaron las siguientes determinaciones: Prote�-nas Totales (PT), Alb�mina (Alb), Apolipoprote�na-B (Apo-B) e Inmunoglobulina M (IgM).

Debido a la falta de datos sobre este tema, este estudio provee informaci�n bioqu�mica de utilidad para estudios biol�gicos y veterinarios en mam�feros marinos, y la conservaci�n de la especie en zool�gicos y acuarios.
