Biological nitrogen (N) fixation (BNF) by soil diazotrophs plays an essential role in reducing N fertilizer input in acidified agricultural soils. Amendments can improve the acidic soil environment and increase crop yield and N utilization, but it is still unclear whether their effects on BNF rates and soil diazotrophic communities contribute to N utilization by crop.
