Images and Photo Register from an Evaluation at Woodside Avenue, Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne 2021

This collection comprises images and a photographic register from an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on land at Woodside Avenue, Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne undertaken by Allen Archaeology Limited to inform future planning decisions prior to proposed ground reduction. The site lies outside of the Roman civilian settlement associated with Segedunum at Wallsend on Hadrian's Wall, and beyond the area in which evidence of Roman finds have been recorded. There is no evidence for medieval archaeological activity on the site. During the 17th century there was a significant increase in coalmining activity on Tyneside but the site does not appear to have been used within the industry for any purpose apart for dumping colliery waste, and remained undeveloped. In the 19th century the site was developed for terrace housing which was subsequently demolished in 2017.
