Characterization of the fish communities from the ice-edge on the Weddell Sea

During the Alfred Wegener Institute campaign on board the RV Polarstern were
characterized ictic communities and collected biological data specially
referenced were the sensorial organisms and the trophic structure of the
community. It was done from 38 stations, formed by 17 bottom trawling with
Agassiz net, 16 with a benthic fishing equipment and 9 with a benthopelagic
fishing equipment.

In each trawl the following tasks were done:
-To assess the fish proportion
-Classification to a species level
-Numeric determination and weight of each species
-Determination of the size frequency
-Sex proportion and maturity stages by Kock and Kelllerman
-Biological sampling

A database was created to include all the compiled information.

In each station were sampled 10 stomachs with food by species. The gall bladder
condition was examined to separate the empty stomach to those that seemed had
brought up food. The stomach contents were analyzed onboard the vessel. The
volume of food was measured using a trofometer, formed by several moulds of
half cylinders with different sizes. When possible the preys were identified to
species level. For every taxon prey was collected information about:

-percentage on volume of the food
-individual number
-digestion stage
-prey size (mm)

The relative importance of the preys was evaluated using the percentage on
volume index.

7 morphologic measurements were done onboard for each specimen (maximum and
minimum eye diameter, eye deep, mouth width and length) in the following 11
species of the F. Artedidraconidae. The data were produced partially onboard,
integrated with the data obtained in the ANT XIII/3 campaign carried out in the
same area in 1996.

Otolites belonging to 50 species of Teleosteos, mainly Artedidraconidae,
Channichthydae, Bathydraconidae and Nototheniidae were dissected and kept dry
to study the fishes growth and to establish a morphologic database associated
to internet.

Durante la Campana del Alfred Wegener Institut a bordo del RV Polarstern, se
han caracterizado comunidades icticas y recolectado datos biologicos con
especial referencia a los organos sensoriales y la estructura trofica de la
comunidad. Se realizaron 38 estaciones compuesta de 17 pescas de fondo con red
Agassiz, 16 con un arte de arrastre bentonico y 9 con un arte bentopelagico.

En cada pesca se realizaron las siguientes tareas:
-triado de la captura y cuantificacion de la proporcion de peces,
-clasificacion a nivel de especie,
-determinacion numerica y en peso de cada especie,
-determinacion de la frecuencia de tallas,
-proporcion de sexos y estados de madurez segun la clave Kock y Kellermann,
-muestro biologico.

Se creo una base de datos donde se registro la informacion recopilada.

En cada estacion se procuro muestrear 10 estomagos con alimento por especie. Se
examino el estado de la vesicula biliar pera separar los estomagos realmente
vacios de los que lo parecian por haber regurgitado su alimento. Los contenidos
estomacales fueron analizados a bordo del barco. El volumen de bolo alimenticio
fue medido utilizando un trofometro, consistente en varios moldes de medios
cilindros de diferentes tamanos. Siempre que fue posible se identificaron las
presas al nivel de especie. Para cada taxon presa se recogio informacion de:

-porcentaje del volumen del bolo alimenticio,
-numero de individuos,
-estado de digestion,
-tamaño de cada presa (mm).

La importancia relativa de las presas fue evaluada utilizando el indice de
porcentaje de volumen.

A bordo, se realizaron 7 medidas morfologicas para cada ejemplar (longitud del
barbillon, diametros maximo y minimo del ojo, profundidad ocular, diametro del
cristalino, anchura y longitud de la boca) en las siguientes 11 especies de la
F. Artedidraconidae. Los datos se elaboraron parcialmente a bordo, integrados
con los datos obtenidos en la campana ANT XIII/3 realizada en la misma zona en
el ano 1996.

Se diseccionaron y guardaron en seco otolitos pertenecientes a 50 especiesde
Teleosteos, esencialmente de las familias Artedidraconidae, Channichthydae,
Bathydraconidae y Nototheniidae con el objetivo de estudiar el crecimiento de
peces y de establecer una base de datos morfometricos asociada a internet.
