Bacteria able to degrade cellulose in a form of carboxymethyl cellulose were isolated from the sewage sludge (SS). The conducted study test whether the cellulolytic mixed culture of autochthonous bacteria are able to improve degradation of cellulose after inoculation of the SS. Enhanced degradation of cellulose may improve the hydrolysis of sewage sludge, during a methane fermentation, thus biomethane production.
