In the present study, we investigated the impact of biogenic magnetite on methanogenic degradation of propionate, which is a key intermediate during complex organic matter oxidation under methanogenic conditions in paddy soils . The experimental results showed that compared with the enrichments without biogenic magnetite, biogenic magnetite facilitated CH4 production from propionate, in which biogenic magnetite might facilitate direct electron transfer between the bacterial Anaerolinaceae and the archaeal Methanosarcinaceae and Methanocellaceae.
