Hybrid Morphologic and Compositional Map of a Portion of the South Polar Residual Cap, Mars

Overview The highest elevations near Mars's south pole host a variety of volatile-rich deposits that preserve both short- and long-term records of variation in the planet's climate. To better understand the variety of (and relationships between) these climate records, we have compiled a 1:500,000-scale hybrid geologic map of a portion of the South Polar Resdual Cap and surrounding material. Unlike traditional planetary maps, this hybrid map fully integrates both morphologic and compositional characteristics of unit exposures to provide a comprehensive view of surface geology. We also evaluated associations between mapped hybrid units and radar data to understand how these deposits relate to subsurface structures. This repository archives the custom basemaps that were used to produce the hybrid map, the final hybrid product and intermediate maps of morphology and composition, and a set of transects and assoiated radar profiles. Contents basemaps.zip Includes GeoTiffs for the custom compositional, morphologic, and topographic basemaps used to generate and visualize map units/linework. Shapefiles that provide information on data sources for each basemap are also included. basemaps_info.txt provides information on each basemap product, including coordinate systems and recommended symbology for display in GIS software. maps.zip Includes Shapefiles with contact linework and unit polygons for the compositional and morphologic reference maps and the final hybrid map.
