Permanganate index(Imn) is a key parameter of urban water supply source, which indicate the pollution of organic and inorganic oxidizable substances in water. It is of great significance to study the influence of sediment and algal growth on Imn. We artificially added sediment to the water, and cultured it for 41 days to observe the changes of Imn and algal density. By simulating eutrophic water for algae culture, the results showed that both the organic matter in sediment and algal growth were the causes of high Imn in water. There was a significant positive correlation between Imn and algal density. There was a significant negative correlation between total phosphorus and algal density. The sediment resuspension could release organic matter into the water, resulting in an immediate increase in Imn. The phosphate in sediment could stimulate the growth of algae that released the reducing metabolites, leading to continuous increase of Imn.
