AIS Trajectory Dataset for Ship Encounters in Congested Waters

This dataset contains AIS trajectory data collected from ship encounters in congested waters near the Lantau Strait, Hong Kong, during August 2018. A total of <b>858 encounter trajectories</b> are included, covering three distinct types of maritime encounter scenarios:<b>Crossing encounters</b> (279 samples)<b>Head-on encounters</b> (310 samples)<b>Overtaking encounters</b> (269 samples)Each encounter trajectory consists of time-stamped AIS dynamic messages, including vessel positions (latitude, longitude), speed over ground (SOG), course over ground (COG), and heading, with synchronized records for both encountering ships.The dataset has been preprocessed and segmented around the closest point of approach (CPA) to ensure consistent encounter windows. This enables detailed <b>pattern recognition</b>, <b>encounter classification</b>, and <b>spatiotemporal feature extraction</b> for maritime risk assessment, ship behavior modeling, and collision risk studies.The data is well-suited for machine learning-based maritime traffic analysis, ship behavior prediction, and the development of intelligent decision support systems for navigation safety.
