Online purchases surged during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in China. According to a survey on Chinese online shopping behavior conducted by Rakuten Insight in May 2020, about 62 percent of respondents who had increased online purchases during the epidemic said that they did that to avoid waiting in queues in the supermarket. The most in-demand items for online purchases were food and groceries and personal hygiene products such as toilet paper and masks.
