资源简介:
Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health challenge, worsened by improper antibiotic prescription. Dentists play a significant role in primary healthcare antibiotic use, yet inadequate knowledge and expertise among dentists often lead to improper antimicrobial prescribing practices. This necessitates evaluating their knowledge, attitudes, and practices for effective AMR control. Objective: This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of private dentists in Myanmar regarding antimicrobial prescription and waste management, specifically the discharge of unused, unwanted, and expired antimicrobials among dentists.Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 298 dentists in the private sector in Myanmar using online Google Forms questionnaires. The data were collected on knowledge, attitudes, and current practices regarding antimicrobial prescription and antimicrobial waste management, alongside perspectives on challenges and opportunities for improving antimicrobial stewardship. Results: Although 67% of dentists exhibited positive attitudes toward responsible antibiotic use and waste disposal, only 41% demonstrated adequate knowledge of AMU and AMR, and 61% showed good prescribing practices. Nearly one-third displayed poor to moderate practices, with only 17.1% familiar with One Health concepts and many lacking environmental awareness regarding waste management. Key challenges included insufficient training and guidelines, while opportunities encompassed support from professional organizations and strengthening the National Action Plan on AMR.Conclusion: This study reveals significant gaps in knowledge and practice among Myanmar’s private dentists, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions, improved education, and policy development to enhance antimicrobial prescribing and waste management through integrating the One Health approach into dental practice.
