This systematic review investigates the effects of fermented foods (FF) on gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort and normal defecation in healthy adults, following European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) guidelines. GI discomfort includes symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and excessive gas. A reduction in these symptoms indicates improved GI function, which is a beneficial effect. The review will also assess FF's impact on defecation, including bowel movement frequency, stool bulk, consistency, and transit time, all crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system without causing diarrhoea.
