Larvivorous Fish and Their Role in Human Welfare
Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya pose significant public health challenges worldwide. Larvivorous fish, which feed on mosquito larvae, offer an eco-friendly and sustainable method of biological mosquito control. This study explores the role of various larvivorous fish species, including Gambusia affinis (mosquitofish), Poecilia reticulata (guppy), and Aplocheilus panchax (killifish), in controlling mosquito populations. Their feeding behavior, habitat preferences, effectiveness in different ecological conditions, and advantages over chemical insecticides are analyzed. The study also discusses potential limitations such as habitat destruction, competition with native species, and adaptability to environmental changes. Integrating larvivorous fish into vector control programs can significantly reduce the incidence of mosquito-borne diseases, promoting human health and ecological balance. This dissertation highlights the importance of larvivorous fish in public health strategies and suggests measures to optimize their effectiveness in disease control programs.
