In mammalian cells, the mitotic cohesin core complex consists of four proteins, SMC1A, SMC3, RAD21 and either STAG1 or STAG2. Meiotic isoforms of cohesin core subunits also exist; in particular, SMC1A can be replaced by SMC1B. SMC1B is regarded as a meiosis-specific cohesin component that plays roles in sister chromatid cohesion, chromosome architecture, and in protecting telomere structures. The aim of this work is to investigate the role of SMC1B in gene transcription regulation by a genome-wide approach.
