These data and code include surface fuels and prescribed fire emissions data from the Teakettle Experimental Forest in the Sierra Nevada, California, USA. These data include transect data of surface fuels and the emissions from a 2017 prescribed burn. Emissions from the prescribed burn were calculated using a stock change approach by subtracting pre-burn surface fuels from post-burn surface fuels. We used these data and a Monte Carlo simulation approach to estimate the frequency of prescribed burning required to reduce surface fuels following a widespread overstory tree mortality event., These data were collected using a modified Brown's transect. The data are from Goodwin et al. (2020) and specifics of the sampling approach and calculations to convert point-intercept sampling to mass per unit area are described in the paper.Â

## Description of the data and file structure
There are three csv files.
annualC.csv - This file contains two columns. The first column is the grid point and transect identifier for the modified Brown's transect used to collect the surface fuel data. The second column is the mean annualized surface fuel accumulation rate for the period 2011 through 2017. This period precedes the period of heavy snagfall. The units are Mg C/ha.
annualCpost.csv - This file contains two columns. The first column is the grid point and transect identifier for the modified Brown's transect used to collect the surface fuel data. The second column is the mean annualized surface fuel accumulation rate for the period 2021 through 2022. This is the period of heavy snagfall. The units are Mg C/ha.
