Seawater samples collected across the coastline of South Africa were selected to represent natural and anthropogenically impacted sites. Metabarcoding of the eDNA extracted from these samples was performed, targeting a section of the eukaryotic cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI), a section of the V4 region of the eukaryotic nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (18S) and the V3-V4 hyper-variable region of prokaryotic small subunit ribosomal DNA (16S).
