The decoding rules displayed graphically and as fine print in Figure 4 are reproduced here for clarity. The th column of the table corresponds to the th position state (as reflected by the vertical alignment in Figure 4), and contains decoding instructions for the th state that are specified by the indices of the two most informative channels, and , and their corresponding spike thresholds, and . (As indicated in the context of Figure 4, some elements of the rule table are empty because the associated states had fewer than channels able to satisfy the minimum sensitivity and positive predictive value for state decoding.)
