Survey Data from a Geophysical Survey at Castle Hillfort, Wiveliscombe, Somerset, March 2022

This collection comprises a report alongside geophysical survey data as raw data, processed images, and an interpretative plan. The magnetometer survey was undertaken at Castle Hillfort, Wiveliscombe, Somerset in March 2022 by SUMO Geophysics Ltd. The magnetometer survey has produced a complex dataset which is difficult to interpret. While it is tempting to suggest the results in the eastern half of the hillfort indicate a series of archaeological enclosures, in reality the local conglomerate / limestone bedrock could be responsible for the range of anomalies visible in both halves of the site. Former field boundaries, other land divisions and possible ridge and furrow cultivation have been recorded, along with a former building visible on old mapping. Although no definite enclosures, roundhouses, pits or tracks have been identified there is a multitude of anomalies which would benefit from being evaluated by excavation; in this way a far better understanding of the significance of the magnetic results would be obtained.
