NRS-1837 | Registers of prison staff

The registers of prison staff are volumes and paper documents that record the staff member's name and position along with the start date of employment in the prison service.The bound registers, record the gaol and the date that a staff member began in a particular position. If a staff member was in a position continuously during the creation of a new register that information is brought forward from the previous register. These entries are generally recorded at the beginning of the relevant gaol list. This means that some information is duplicated from one register to another.The 1843 to 1869 register is recorded on blue paper pages and pinned together. These do not record which prison the person worked in. They record the following details: rank, name, date of first appointment to prison service and remarks.The volume covering the period between 1868 and 1873 contain an index to gaols and an alphabetical index to staff, the volume is arranged by prison and contain the following information: office, name, dates of appointment to prison department – first and present, and remarks. As some information has been brought forward from the previous register, dates of service can predate the date that the volume was created.The volume covering the period between 1874 and 1887 contains an index to gaols and an alphabetical index to staff. The volume is arranged by prison and contains the following information: office, name, dates of appointment to prison service – first and present, remarks, disposal and date and number of papers. The volume is arranged by prison and contains the following information: position, name, dates of appointment to prison service – first and present, in room of, date of transfer or leaving the service and number of papers.
