NRS-19759 | Portion Plans [Tumbarumba Lands Office]

This series comprises a collection of loose papers with surveyor's plans of portions of land in the Land District of Tumbarumba. Not all the plans in the series are in the same style, size or scale. However, most do appear to have been approved by 'Draftsman in Charge: A.J. Hare.' Some plans have been drawn up for the purpose of identifying land that has been applied for particular leases, such as Settlement Leases, Special Leases and Auction Sales, and some identify the person applying for the lease of the portion of land also. Some plans are specific for Subdivision Surveys. Some plans also state if the portion is within, or alongside, a marked Gold field. Portions of land are identified by their Parish and County, as well as Land District and Land Board District. The plans show details of the land surveyed, including boundaries, with neighbouring portions of land identified by the name of the owner or leasee, or if Crown Land or Reserves. The area size of the surrounding portions of land are also provided. Other details identified in the plans include creeks or rivers that run through or alongside the portion of land, and also identified are roads, railways and fences. The land itself also has identifying features marked, such as ridges, and the type of vegetation on the land, be it scrub, pasture or trees, and which particular species of tree. The plans are generally drawn to a scale of 20 Chains to an inch on the smaller plans, and on the larger plans, 40 Chains to an inch.The information pre-printed onto the plans also refers to the Crown Lands Act of 1884, which set out a comprehensive system of land tenures, including conditional leases for land adjoining conditional purchases, occupation licenses, homestead leases, and special purpose leases. Land districts were established and superceded the local land agents.
