VPRS 13743 Personal Papers of Mark Birrell

This series comprises the personal papers of the Hon. Mark Birrell created when he was the President of the Young Liberal Movement in 1980 and was elected to the Legislative Council seat of East Yarra Province in 1983. The Hon. Mark Birrell's papers were transferred from his electoral office on his retirement from Parliament in the November 2002 election. The papers were from his various ministries, a very complete set of his FOI requests in the 1980s, a very complete set of copies of all his outward correspondence, papers from his position on the board of the Centernary of Federation, copies of publications etc. Consignment P1: Freedom of Information (FOI) Files These files relate to FOI requests made by Birrell and other MPs. The contents basically comprise written requests or applications of access to documents, photocopies of documents whereby access was granted and decisions of internal review of rejected FOI requests. These files were arranged in numeric order followed by the last 2 digits of the year of completion of the FOI request. A separate sequence was created and the files arranged with an alpha prefix followed by the last 2 digits of the year. A master storage list was located at the time of creation of Consignment P1 which indexed the FOI records from the subject content of the files. Consignment P2: Quick reference correspondence files These files detail Birrell's activities on a number of ministerial posts. These include: - Minister for Major Projects (1992-1996) - Minister for Conservation and Environment (1992-1996) - Minister for Industry, Science and Technology (1996-1999) - Shadow Minister for Planning and Environment - Shadow Minister for Health These files contain correspondence, reports and other similar items created during the period 1985 to 2002. These files are arranged chronologically.
