English Language Tasks in Chinese Workplaces: A Study Based on Vocational College Graduates’ Occupational Needs

Purpose of the Dataset: This dataset supports the empirical study on workplace English Language Usage Tasks (LUTs) for higher vocational college graduates in China (manuscript title: “English Language Tasks in Chinese Workplaces: A Study Based on Vocational College Graduates’ Occupational Needs”). Its core purpose is to provide transparent, replicable evidence for analyzing the alignment between vocational English teaching and real-world occupational linguistic demands, serving as a foundation for subsequent research on curriculum design, employability enhancement, and language needs analysis. Nature of the Dataset: This is a mixed-methods dataset integrating quantitative survey data (Excel/CSV format) and qualitative interview transcripts (Word/PDF format). The quantitative part includes structured responses on participants’ demographics, workplace English task frequency, and skill demand evaluations. The qualitative part contains in-depth descriptions of English tasks, challenges, and teaching perceptions from semi-structured interviews. All data are de-identified to protect privacy. Scope of the Dataset: The dataset includes 684 vocational college graduates from 5 geographically diverse Chinese cities (covering eastern, central, and western regions). Participants represent high-English-demand disciplines (e.g., business administration, international trade). It contains 28 structured survey items and 32 semi-structured interview records.
