VPRS 18563 Record of Registrars of Marriage

This series was created to record who was in office as a registrar of marriage along with gazette folio in each district within Victoria kept by the Registrar General's Department.Powers to appoint registrars of marriage were included in :An Act to amend and consolidate the laws affecting the solemnization of marriage no. LXX. 1859III. No marriage shall be celebrated except by some minister of religion ordinarily officiating as such whose name designation usual place of residence together with the church or chapel or other place of worship in which he officiates shall have been registered and shall then continue registered under the provisions of the 16 Victoria No. 26 in the office of the registrar general for births deaths and marriages in Victoria or by a minister of religion being the recognised head of a religious denomination or by ministers not having a registered place of worship who shall hold a registered certificate from the head of the denomination to which they belong that they are regularly authorised ministers priests or deacons or where there is no recognised head then by at least two clergymen who come under the provision of the first part of this clause which said church or chapel or other place of worship and which said certificate the registrar general is hereby required to register without fee or reward or by the registrar general of the colony or by such other officer or officers as the Governor in Council may from time to time appoint for that purpose provided every such appointment shall have been published in the Government Gazette and every marriage performed by the registrar general or other officer under the provisions of this Act shall be in and by the form of words set forth in the Schedule marked B hereto annexed which words shall be repeated and the declaration signed by the parties to such marriage respectively.The information contained includes: District name; Name of Registrar; Profession or Employment; Date of Appointment; Gazette folio; Remarks eg resigned, deceased.An alphabetical index of districts appears at the front of the volume referring users to relevant page numbers within the volume for that district.
