The 35S rRNA genes in fungi and plants (called 45S rRNA genes in animals) are one of the most important genes in the genome. For this project, we study mutation pattern and homogenization (concerted evolution) of coding rRNA and non-coding rRNA sequences in multiply repeated 35S rRNA genes in natural interspecific hybrids of the first generations as well as in more ancient hybrid species.
