资源简介:
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been defined by an array of biochemical, physiological, clinical, and metabolic factors that precisely foster the risk of atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality. It was earlier thought that MetS, a collection of several cardiovascular risk factors, was rare among the generality of sub-Saharan Black Africans. But contrary to this assumption, the prevalence of this disorder is relatively high and tends to increase with age. It has been suggested that the transition from traditional African diet and lifestyle to western diet and lifestyle has contributed to the perceived increase in metabolic disorders. Dyslipidemia, a combined metabolic disorder linked with high total cholesterol (TC) and/or triglyceride (TG) levels, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), is a precursor of MetS, and it contributes to the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus (DM) and atherosclerosis. Certain diseases have risk factors for MetS.
