Global Surface Water-Continuous Area (GSWCA): A continuous monthly surface area timeseries dataset for global lakes, reservoirs, and rivers (2000–2021)

Overview This repository contains the dataset for the manuscript "Mismatch Between Surface Water Extent Change and Human Demand" for future review. This dataset, named Global Surface Water-Continuous Area (GSWCA), provides spatiotemporally complete, high-temporal-resolution (monthly) surface water area time series for over 3.6M global lakes and reservoirs, and rivers with total length of 1.97M kilometers from 2000 to 2021. File Descriptions and Column Definitions 1. GSWCA_lake_area.csvThis file contains the monthly gap-filled surface water area time series for global lakes and reservoirs. id: The unique identifier for each lake or reservoir. The first two letters indicate the source database of its geographical outline, and the following numbers represent its original ID within the corresponding source database. The two-letter prefixes are: GR: GRanD (Global Reservoir and Dam Database, https://www.globaldamwatch.org/grand/) GD: GeoDAR (Georeferenced Global Dams and Reservoirs, https://zenodo.org/records/6163413) HL: HydroLakes (https://www.hydrosheds.org/products/hydrolakes) GL: GLAKES (https://zenodo.org/records/7016548) 2000-01 to 2021-12: The gap-filled surface water area values for each corresponding month in m². 2. GSWCA_lake_info.csvThis file provides the essential metadata and attributes for the lakes and reservoirs corresponding to the IDs in the area file. id: The unique identifier matching the one in GSWCA_lake_area.csv. x / y: The longitude and latitude coordinates of the waterbody. area: The mean surface area of the waterbody. res_mark_src: Indicates the source database used to identify the waterbody as a reservoir, along with its construction year if such information is available in the database. is_new_res: A boolean flag (TRUE/FALSE) indicating whether the reservoir is a "new reservoir" established after the year 2000. 3. GSWCA_river_area.csvThis file contains the monthly surface water area time series for global river reaches. HyBas_id: The unique identifier for the river reach unit, corresponding to its ID in the HydroBASINS (https://www.hydrosheds.org/products/hydrobasins) level 8 database. 2000-01 to 2021-12: The gap-filled surface water area values for the river reach for each corresponding month in m².
