We constructed twelve Eucalyptus globulus mRNA libraries from developing xylem of tension and opposite wood collected from trees subjected to mechanical/gravitropic stress. Deep-sequencing of these mRNA libraries and analysis of the data allowed for the identification of 88 differentially expressed genes between tension and opposite wood tissues. This fundamental knowledge of the transcriptome dynamics of xylogenesis and cell wall biosynthesis in these highly contrasting wood tissues will enable to develop new and more efficient strategies to improve wood biomass for various species of trees.
