Data from: Drivers of variation in critical swimming speed of freshwater fishes

Swimming performance is a key trait of aquatic organisms that helps us understand and predict changes in their distribution and survival, thereby providing crucial information for biodiversity conservation. A common measure of swimming performance in freshwater fishes is critical swimming speed (Ucrit), a lab-based measure of prolonged swimming used in routine activities such as foraging and migration. Here, we provide the data underlying the first global analysis of critical swimming speed of freshwater fishes in relation to species traits, abiotic conditions and experimental set-up.
