This data set accompanies the paper "Green Haemodialysis: Comparison of Dialysis Bags Versus Fresenius Granumix Water Recycling System at the AOU Policlinico di Modena, Italy" by James Larkin and others. It evaluates the environmental sustainability of traditional acid concentrate bags against the Fresenius Granumix system in hemodialysis. Utilising a comprehensive life cycle assessment conducted via OpenLCA software, the study reveals that the Granumix system significantly reduces environmental impacts, particularly in carbon emissions and freshwater ecotoxicity. This system, which prepares dialysate centrally using dry powder, diminishes the need for transportation of water-laden products and the disposal of single-use plastic bags. Notably, it cuts CO2-equivalent emissions by 32% and reduces freshwater ecotoxicity by 51%. These results underscore the Granumix system as a more sustainable alternative in hemodialysis, reducing waste and resource use, and align with global efforts towards more environmentally friendly healthcare solutions.
