Mosquitoes reared in distinct insectaries within an institution possess divergent microbiomes

The mosquito microbiome can affect many facets of host biology and its composition is influenced by diverse factors. Here we reared Aedes aegypti individuals from a single cohort of eggs in three insectaries in parallel, to identify how the insectary environment affects the mosquito microbiome. We assessed microbiome composition in larvae and adult female mosquitoes as well as their environment and food sources (tap water, fish food, sugar solution and larval water). The results highlight the importance of considering the variability and effects of different microbiome composition, even in the relatively stable environment of the insectary.
