Ex-ante Assessment of Farmers and Consumers Acceptability of Genetically Modified (GM) Rice Products in the Philippines

This study is a continuation of the first study on knowledge, attitude and perception of key stakeholders on biotechnology and GMO. This study involved farmers and consumers, in particular. While farmers are themselves consumers, their attitude and perception of rice biotechnology is also important in the adoption of the technology. AS producers and sellers of GM rice, farmers’ opinion and acceptance may differ from the wider public. The study aimed to assess the farmers and consumers acceptance of GM rice including Bt pest-resistance rice, golden and iron-enriched rices. Specifically, it aimed to determine the respondents’ level of awareness and understanding of genetic engineering, GMOs and rice biotechnology; assess respondents’ attitudes and acceptance of GM rice products, and examine the commercial potential of Gm rice products.
