Pollen and δ13C(org) analysis of a lacustrine sediment profile from Skrzynka in Poland

Lacustrine sediment core from the Skrzynka site located in the SE Poland have been studied using pollen analysis to determine a detailed record of climatic oscillations during the Masovian Interglacial (MIS 11c). To achieve this, enhanced resolution sampling (every 2 cm) was applied. The palynological record of the Skrzynka II core contains nearly the entire MIS 11c succession, excluding only the earliest protocratic stage. Both major oscillations known from other European localities, i.e., the Older Holsteinian Oscillation (OHO) and the Younger Holsteinian Oscillation (YHO), are present in the Skrzynka II record. Moreover, another two significant regressive episodes were described in the mesocratic and telocratic stage of Masovian Interglacial, respectively. Enhanced sampling resolution also enabled the description of several other minor, local-scale climatic events or disturbances. Palynological analysis was additionally supported by a δ13C(org) study of the same deposits. Results of the isotope analysis corresponds well with pollen data only in the lower part of the succession. Since the early Carpinus/Abies phase δ13C(org) data is inconsistent with the pollen record, as a result of an unknown disturbance.
