Lin wrote a <em>Proclamation to Foreign Merchants</em> in 1839 to demonstrate his hatred for the opium trade and warned the foreign traders at Canton to stop the opium trade. The letter is translated by American Missionary Peter Parker and collected in <em>Chouban yiwu shimo </em>筹办夷物始末 [A retrospect of undertaking the westernization affairs 1836-1875] and The Chinese Repository (1839, p. 602-605).
