Two identical datasets are developed based on integrated remote sensing and statistical data (covering cropland grain yield, fertilizer consumption and irrigation water use), which provide yield improvement potential and nitrogen/phosphorus fertilizer reduction potential for three major staple crops: rice, maize and wheat. Both datasets have a spatial resolution of 5’ ×5’ and are output in TIFF format. Another set of datasets is simulated using MODIS satellite products and ground meteorological station data from China, including potential yield and yield gap of rice in the Northeast China Plain (500 m resolution), potential yield and yield gap of rice in the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain (500 m resolution), potential yield and yield gap of maize in the Northeast China Plain (1000 m resolution), potential yield and yield gap of maize in the North China Plain (1000 m resolution), and potential yield and yield gap of winter wheat in the North China Plain (1000 m resolution). All datasets adopt the Albers Equal Area projection, with a central meridian of 127°E and two standard parallels at 43°N and 47°N respectively. Specifically, the rice potential yield and yield gap datasets for the Northeast China Plain have 2569 × 3259 pixels at 500 m resolution; those for the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain have 2335 × 1796 pixels at 500 m resolution; the maize potential yield and yield gap datasets for the Northeast China Plain have 1144 × 1667 pixels at 1000 m resolution; those for the North China Plain have 1014 × 1067 pixels at 1000 m resolution; and the winter wheat potential yield and yield gap datasets for the North China Plain have 1035 × 1150 pixels at 1000 m resolution. All outputs are in GeoTIFF format.
