Survey of Leisure Time Activities, 1978 [Canada]: Reading Habits

Although the 1978 survey contains some of the same data elements as the previous surveys, comparisons may be difficult. The reference period has changed from the 1975 survey and as the survey title suggests, the emphasis has been placed on the reading habits of Canadians. In addition, the language characteristics of the respondent have been expanded to include the language of the questionnaire used, the language first learned and still understood, language(s) read and language most often spoken at home. A description of the respondent's formal education was added due to its perceived impact on reading as a leisure activity. The respondent's reading habits were explored in considerable detail including questions on the books, magazines and newspapers read by the respondent. A section soliciting the opinions and motivating factors influencing the respondent's reading as a leisure activity was added to the 1978 survey.
