This data is the collated data containing five subsets of data: Ratings of the importance of listed emotions in musicRatings of the arousal of listed emotionsRatings of the valence of listed emotions Ratings of the perception of listed emotions in 8 excerpts of Western Classical music Ratings of the perception of listed emotions in 8 excerpts of North American Jazz. Each subset includes the evaluation of 12 emotion pairs as indicated in the names using the following key:1 anger, aggression -- ang2 confidence, pride -- con3 enthusiasm, interest -- ent4 indifference, boredom -- ind5 joy, happiness -- joy6 longing, nostalgia -- lon7 relaxation, calmness -- rel8 repulsion, aversion -- rep9 sadness, depression -- sad10 spirituality, transcendence -- spi11 tenderness, love -- ten12 tense, unease -- tns<br><br>Eight excerpts of WC (western classical music), and NJ (north american jazz) were presented to participants. The key for these excerpts are:j=joy (or positive valence and high arousal), c=calm (or positive valence and low arousal), s=sad (or negative valence and low arousal), t=tension (or negative valence and high arousal). Additionally, these indicators are qualified by an m=moderate and e=extreme, indicating a more moderate and extreme version. Four groups of participants participated in the research: younger (18-30) and older (56-68) participants from Japan or UK. This research obtained ethics approval via the University of Sheffield, under ethics number: 056099
