Man-made freshwater ponds were filled with natural stream water in Frederick, MD, USA and fertilized with chicken manure to stimulate blooms of microalgae. Microalgae biomass would subsequently be harvested and converted into biofuel. The 16S rRNA gene community was monitored in the water overtime to track which bacterial communities were most responsive to the eutrophication of the water. In a parallel study, the microalgal 18S rRNA gene community was also studied.
