HIV self-testing (HIVST) enables individuals to privately conduct their own tests and has increased testing among vulnerable populations in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This scoping study evaluates the acceptance of HIVST among key groups, including men who have sex with men, female sex workers, individuals who inject drugs, the LGBT community, and young women. The review applies Arksey and O’Malley's framework, analyzing literature from 2010 to 2023. Findings indicate a high acceptance of HIVST, with peer-led and online distribution methods improving uptake. However, concerns about the lack of counseling and care linkage, user errors, and economic costs of HIVST programs present challenges. The study concludes that while HIVST could improve testing rates among high-risk groups in SSA, systematic efforts to address economic, educational, and structural barriers are essential for its successful implementation within HIV prevention and care.
