Transcriptomic analysis of Streptococcus pneumoniae during pneumonia-derived sepsis

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the human nasopharyngeal tract. Despite being a commensal, pneumococcus has the capacity to cause serious diseases, including otitis media, acute pneumoniae, pneumoniae-associated adverse cardiac event (PACE), invasive bacteremic sepsis and meningitis. In this study we utilized RNA-sequencing to monitor the temporal changes in the expression of pneumococcus genes during acute pneumonia and pneumonia-derived sepsis.
