Amanita muscaria, or the “Fly Agaric”, is a charismatic ectomycorrhizal fungus found in North America, Europe and Asia. The fruiting body is the classic red and white-spotted mushroom drawn in cartoons and fairy tales. The name encompasses a species complex, and the sequenced strain is A. muscaria var. guessowii, collected near red pine in Pennsylvania in August 2003. Mushrooms of this variety are often bright yellow or yellow and orange, and the variety is likely to be recognized as distinct species, eventually.
