This research presents the first evaluation of 3 kHz whale pingers deployed in artisanal fishing nets throughout an entire whale reproductive season in northern Peru. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of whale pingers (i.e., low-frequency pingers in the 3-20 kHz range) in the region's small-scale gillnet fishery, with a specific focus on reducing humpback whale entanglements. Our results revealed a 52.9% reduction in whale entanglements in nets equipped with pingers compared to control nets. These findings are significant as they highlight the potential of whale pingers to lower entanglement rates in gillnet fisheries.
