Replication Data for: DOC - BEA Data by Place: States

Data are from the Department of Commerce - Bureau of Economic Analysis (DOC - BEA).  The BEA website lists the following items available [quoted from the landing page (https://www.bea.gov/index.php/data/by-place-states-territories); accessed 12/01/2025]:

GDP by State with Industry Detail State counterpart of national GDP, including industries' contributions to each state economy

Consumer Spending by State Spending by residents of the 50 states and D.C.

Real Consumer Spending by State Consumer spending adjusted for state price level differences and national inflation

Personal Income by State Wages, proprietors' income, dividends, interest, rents, and other income received by each state's residents

Real Personal Income by State and Metro Area Personal income adjusted for state and metro area price level differences and national inflation

There are multiple geographic levels available, plus multiple metrics for each category as well.  These data are for the States and state level entities (i.e., Territories) listings.  BEA publishes data at a Local and National scale as well.  For all three geographic levels (Local, State, National), there are 519 table types available, listed in the file BEA_All_Tables_Comprehensive.csv.  However, for each table, there are often multiple time periods (Annual, Quarterly) as well. The full listing of all tables contained in the entire 3 datasets is in BEA_Inventory_Report.xslx.  The latter can also be examined for files only occurring in the States dataset where the “Directory” column is “BEA_States”.
