Exploring the impact of streetscapes and sense of place on urban vitality A spatial and correlation analysis

This study explored the impact of streetscapes and sense of place on urban vitality through spatial and correlation analyses. The focus was understanding how specific elements of the urban landscape contribute to creating a dynamic and vibrant urban environment. Using various neighbourhood units, including institutional, residential, and face-block levels, this study investigated the influence of urban space units such as form, image, and accessibility, as well as streetscape units such as zoning, networks, buildings, and density. Data for the analysis were obtained from floating population records in Seoul, South Korea, and a Geographic Information System spatial analysis was employed to quantify the relationships. The study found that diverse land cover types and pedestrian-friendly environments significantly enhance urban vitality and that sense of place plays a critical role in fostering urban life. Policy recommendations were made to incorporate these findings into urban planning and regeneration strategies to revive urban vitality in South Korean cities.
