The invention relates to tonoplastiary proton / sugar antiporter proteins， in particular tonoplastiary proton / sucrose antiporter proteins and the nucleotide sequences encoding them. The invention also encompasses methods for producing transgenic plants by a) incorporating into a plant cell， a nucleic acid molecule that encodes a protonporter / tonoplastidary sugar protein， characterized in that the protonporter / tonoplastidary sugar protein is specific for saccharose; and b) regeneration of a transgenic plant of the plant cell obtained in step (a).
