This study showed that treated effluent from WWTPs located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, can potentially serve as a source of genetically diverse, multi-drug resistant and virulent strains of MRSA in the receiving surface waters. This is in agreement with previous study which showed the occurrence of MRSA in treated wastewater effluent and receiving rivers. These findings suggest that better wastewater treatment options should be explored to prevent the spread of multi-drug resistant bacteria in the environment and MRSA infections to end-users.
